Camp Packing List

Sleeping Bag: We recommend buying a 3-season for sleeping bag for your child’s career through the sections. Lower thermal quality sleeping bags can certainly be used especially for indoor camps (most Scout Activity Centres with beds will still require use of a sleeping bag). For outdoor camps in tents, a blanket can be used to supplement the thermal performance of the bag. For winter camps we may even suggest using two sleeping bags!

Mat: Even a cheap foam mat offers comfort and insulation. Inflatable mats are now available for a reasonable price, offering better insulation and a smaller packing size. We do not recommend air-beds which do not insulate well and are too large for use in patrol tents.

Pillow: Indoor centres will typically not provide a pillow and can therefore be part of the kit for younger sections. Bringing a pillow to a tent-based camp can be awkward to transport and keep dry and clean though, and an alternative is to bring a pillow case and stuff with (clean and dry!) clothes/towel etc, or a camping pillow. Note that good sleeping bags will usually have a hood-end which obviates the need for a pillow.

Waterproofs: We recommend a good lightweight waterproof jacket combined with layers of clothing as better than an expensive padded jacket. Waterproof trousers give an extra layer of warmth as well as dryness.

Jeans: if denim gets wet it’s cold, sticky and slow to dry. Scouts have a propensity to get wet so please do not bring jeans to camps.

‘Gutties’: an old pair of trainers are excellent for water activities, you don’t need to have water shoes/wet-suit boots for our activities.

Rucksack or hold-all: a rucksack will eventually be required in Scouts for those undertaking expedition challenges.

Uniform: We always wear uniform to and from events.

Penknife: Please do not bring a penknife to camp unless requested. We will encourage Cubs and Scouts to bring a penknife when we can have supervised whittling or gadget making activities.

Mobile Phone: Please do not bring a mobile phone to camp unless requested. We may encourage Scouts to bring a mobile for expeditions for example.

Sweets: Please do not bring sweets to camp. This will deter kids from eating the food and snacks we are providing and result in hyper, sleepless nights.
